Strength training for older adults, in small friendly groups
Strength training for older adults is often easier, and a lot more fun, with company. At Foundation our group classes start with the basics and build gradually, so you can learn together and keep each other turning up.
A relaxed pace and sessions built around movements that carry over to daily life: standing up, stepping, carrying, reaching and pushing. Nobody is rushed and nobody is left behind.
We're starting with five classes. New to strength training? Foundations of Strength teaches the basics, and Stronger for Life is the next step. Foundation Balance & Core, Foundation Mobility and low-impact Foundation Active round it out. The timetable is coming soon, and classes may change as we learn what suits members.
Why a group can help
Plenty of people find it hard to start exercising on their own. Knowing a few familiar faces will be there makes it easier to get out the door, and a shared routine is easier to stick with week after week.
Groups are also a nice way to meet people in town. Many of us spend less time with others as we get older, and a regular session gives you something social to look forward to as well as something good for your body.
The kind of movements involved
Sessions will focus on the strength and balance that help you stay independent. Expect a mix of guided machine work on our Life Fitness equipment and simple bodyweight movements, with easier and harder options for each one.
Sit to stand and step-ups for leg strength
Rows and presses for upper body and posture
Carrying and gripping for everyday tasks
Balance practice with support close by
Starting safely
Before joining a class, every new member has an induction so you know how the equipment works and how to adjust it. That way the classes can focus on building strength rather than learning the basics from scratch.
If you have a heart condition, joint replacement, osteoporosis or any other health concern, have a chat with your GP or physio before you begin and let us know what they suggest.
Frequently asked questions
When will the classes run?
The timetable is coming soon, ahead of our opening on Tuesday 2 March 2027. Unlimited classes are included with founding memberships, Gym and classes, and Premium memberships.
Do I need gym experience to join a group?
No experience needed. Your induction covers how the equipment works, and the sessions are planned for people who are new to strength training as well as those coming back to it after a break.
What if I have a health condition?
Lots of people with health conditions benefit from strength training, but it's worth getting personal advice first. Check with your GP or physio before starting, and let us know about anything we should keep in mind.
Founding memberships from $17.95 a week, with no joining fee and classes included. Your rate stays for as long as you stay a member. We open on Tuesday 2 March 2027.
