Strength training for women, in a welcoming local gym
Strength training for women isn't about bulking up. It's about carrying the shopping with ease, protecting your bones and feeling capable in your own body. Foundation is a friendly mixed gym where women of every age and experience level are genuinely welcome.
Muscle and bone strength both decline with age, and for many women that change becomes more noticeable from midlife onwards. Strength training is one of the best ways to keep both in good shape.
The benefits show up in ordinary moments. Lifting a heavy pot, moving furniture, gardening for an afternoon or picking up a grandchild all get easier when you're stronger.
Clearing up a few myths
A lot of women hold back from weights because of things they've heard over the years. Here are a few we'd like to put to rest.
Lifting weights won't make you bulky by accident
You don't need to be fit or young to begin
Machines count as real strength training
Light weights done well are a perfectly good start
A mixed gym that feels comfortable
Foundation is open to everyone, and we're working hard to make it a place where women feel at ease from the first visit. That means a calm atmosphere, friendly members and no showing off.
Because we're open 24/7, you can also pick the times that suit you best, including quieter hours when you have plenty of space to yourself.
Getting started with confidence
Every new member gets an induction where we show you how the equipment works and how to set it up for your height and build. Our commercial Life Fitness machines guide each movement, which takes the guesswork out of your first few weeks.
If you're pregnant, recently postpartum, going through menopause with specific symptoms or managing a health condition, check with your GP or physio before you begin.
Frequently asked questions
Is Foundation a women-only gym?
No, we're a mixed gym open to everyone. We're focused on making it a welcoming, respectful place for women, and with 24/7 access you can choose the times that feel most comfortable for you.
Will strength training make me bulky?
It's very unlikely. Building a lot of muscle takes years of specific training and eating. For most women, regular strength training simply leads to feeling firmer, stronger and more confident in everyday tasks.
I'm over 50. Is it too late to start?
Not at all. Many women start strength training later in life and find it makes a real difference. Begin with light weights and build up gradually. If you have a health condition, check with your GP or physio first.
