Over 50s fitness

A gym for over 50s that feels like your local

Foundation Strength & Wellness is a gym for over 50s, and for everyone else in town too. We're opening on Tuesday 2 March 2027 with one simple goal: helping local people stay strong enough to keep doing the things they love, for as long as they can.

Why strength matters more after 50

As we get older, muscle and bone strength naturally start to decline. That's a normal part of ageing, but it isn't something you have to simply accept. Regular strength training is one of the most reliable ways to slow that change down.

Stronger legs make stairs and getting up from a chair easier. A stronger back and shoulders help with lifting shopping, grandkids or a bag of potting mix. Better balance means more confidence on uneven ground. These are the everyday wins we care about most.

A gym that works for you, not the other way round

Nobody here expects you to lift heavy or move fast. You get shown how everything works, you start where you're comfortable, and you build from there. The aim is simple: leave each session feeling a bit better than when you walked in.

Owner Chris set up Foundation so locals wouldn't have to drive to Hervey Bay for a proper gym. Older members aren't an afterthought here. They're the main reason we exist, and our classes for strength, balance and mobility are built with you in mind.

Equipment that's comfortable to use

We've chosen commercial Life Fitness equipment. Machines guide your movement along a set path, which makes them a comfortable place to start if free weights feel unfamiliar. Seats and pads adjust to suit different heights and builds.

Every new member gets an induction where we show you how each piece of equipment works, how to set it up for your body and how to start at a weight that feels manageable.

  • Adjustable seats and supports
  • Clear, guided movements on machines
  • Light starting weights with small steps up

Go at your own pace

There's no right speed. Some members will come in three times a week, others once. With 24/7 access you can visit at a time that suits your routine, whether that's early morning before the day gets hot or a quiet mid-afternoon session.

Frequently asked questions

Am I too old to start strength training?
No. People start strength training in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. The key is beginning gently and building up over time. If you have a health condition, a recent injury or haven't exercised in a long while, check with your GP or physio first.
Do I need to be fit before I join?
Not at all. The gym is there to help you get fitter, so you start exactly where you are today. Your induction covers the basics and we'll help you find weights and machines that suit your current level.
How much does membership cost?
Founding memberships start from $17.95 a week with no joining fee, including unlimited classes, and your rate stays for as long as you stay a member. Founding places are limited. See the membership page for every option.
