Classes for seniors

Exercise classes for seniors, at a pace that suits you

Exercise classes for seniors work best when they're friendly, well explained and built around the things you want to keep doing. At Foundation in Burrum Heads, our classes start gently and build gradually, so you can learn alongside people at a similar stage of life.

Five classes, from gentle to strong

We're starting with five group classes, and older members are who we had in mind when we planned them. Each one has easier and harder options, so you work at your own level in the same room as everyone else.

  • Foundation Mobility: gentle whole-body stretching and joint movement to loosen up.
  • Foundations of Strength: the basic strength movements, taught step by step for people new to weights or coming back after a break.
  • Stronger for Life: the next step, building the strength for getting up, carrying and climbing stairs.
  • Foundation Balance & Core: steady balance, coordination and core work, with support close by.
  • Foundation Active: low-impact fitness with light dumbbells, bands and steps, no jumping.

Why classes suit so many older adults

Plenty of people find it hard to start exercising on their own. Knowing a few familiar faces will be there makes it easier to get out the door, and a shared routine is easier to stick with week after week.

Classes are also a nice way to meet people in town. Many of us spend less time with others as we get older, and a regular session gives you something social to look forward to as well as something good for your body.

Strength and balance are what keep you independent: getting out of a low chair, carrying the shopping, stepping off a kerb with confidence. That's what these classes are built around.

Free community health sessions

Alongside the classes, we'll run free community education sessions on healthy ageing, nutrition and staying well. They're a relaxed way to see the gym, ask questions and meet the team before you decide anything.

Dates and topics will be shared closer to opening. Register your interest and we'll let you know when they're on.

Starting safely

Every new member has an induction first, so you know how the equipment works and how to adjust it. That way classes can focus on building strength rather than learning the basics from scratch.

If you have a heart condition, joint replacement, osteoporosis or any other health concern, have a chat with your GP or physio before you begin and let us know what they suggest.

What classes cost

Unlimited classes are included with founding memberships, the Gym and classes membership and Premium. If you'd rather not join, class packs are available, or you can come to a single class for $18. Full details are on the membership page.

Frequently asked questions

When will the classes run?
The timetable is coming soon, ahead of our opening on Tuesday 2 March 2027. Classes and times may change as we learn what suits members.
Do I need to be fit to join a class?
No. Every class has easier options, and Foundations of Strength and Foundation Mobility are good places to start if you're new or coming back after a long break.
Are the community education sessions free?
Yes, they're free. Dates and topics will be shared closer to opening, so register your interest and we'll let you know.
What if I have a health condition?
Lots of people with health conditions benefit from exercise, but it's worth getting personal advice first. Check with your GP or physio before starting, and let us know anything we should keep in mind.
